RE: The tariff classification of 5-Dimethylamino-1-naphthalene (CAS # 4272-77-9) from Japan
Dear Mr. Chivini:
In your letter dated June 1, 1999, you requested a tariff classification ruling.
5-Dimethylamino-1-naphthalene is a sulfonated, aromatic monoamine compound used as a pharmaceutical intermediate. Compound is also a derivative of 1-naphthylamine.
The applicable subheading for 5-Dimethylamno-1-naphthalene, also known as 5-(Dimethylamino)-1-naphthalenesulfonic acid, will be 2921.45.9090, Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTS), which provides for Amine-function compounds: Aromatic monoamines and their derivatives; salts thereof: 1-Naphthylamine (á-Naphthylamine), and their derivatives; salts thereof: Other: Other: Other….. The rate of duty will be 1.2 cents per kilogram plus 12.6 percent ad valorem

This ruling is being issued under the provisions of Part 177 of the Customs Regulations (19 C.F.R. 177).
